A major part of the class will involve understanding how the body affects the voice. Students will learn different breathing techniques, stretches, and warm-up exercises that can help prepare the body and voice for singing. Proper breathing is an important foundation because it supports the voice and helps singers maintain control, endurance, and consistency. The class will also explore how the space and shape inside the mouth, throat, and surrounding areas can influence vocal production. Students will learn how changes in posture, breath, resonance, and vocal placement can affect the quality and sound of the voice. These techniques are designed to help each student discover a healthy and natural way of producing sound.
Voice health and voice therapy will also be an important part of the course. Singers need to understand that the voice is a physical instrument that must be cared for just like any other part of the body. Students will learn about vocal health, proper vocal habits, hydration, rest, and ways to avoid unnecessary strain or damage. Voice therapy concepts will help students become more aware of how they use their voices and how certain habits can affect vocal performance. The goal is not only to become a better singer, but also to develop an understanding of how to maintain a healthy voice over time.
The class will also introduce students to a variety of musical styles and genres. Working with different types of music will allow students to become more versatile performers while learning how vocal technique can change depending on the style being performed. Students will have opportunities to explore different approaches to interpretation, expression, dynamics, and performance. In addition, the class will include basic piano techniques to give students a foundation in musicianship. Learning basic piano skills can help singers understand notes, melodies, chords, scales, and musical structure, making it easier for them to practice independently and become more confident musicians.
Overall, this class is designed to develop the student as a complete vocalist and musician. It combines vocal technique, breathing, physical preparation, vocal health, voice therapy, musical variety, performance skills, and basic piano knowledge. By bringing all of these areas together, students will have the opportunity to strengthen their voices while also learning how to take care of their instruments. The ultimate goal is to help each student become a more confident, knowledgeable, healthy, and expressive singer who understands both the technical and artistic sides of using their voice.
My name is Cavon Dixon. I am a Senior B.A Music Major at Virginia State University, who specializes in Voice and minors in Piano. I played Running Back at Bluefield University for my Freshman and Sophomore years before transferring to VSU in the Fall of 2025. I Went to Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke Va. Music to me is life. It gives such a wide range of culture that I think the world should know. I want people to know that they are not alone and that good things happen to those who wait and do the work while waiting. I have been singing ever since my mom put me in church when I was five and haven't stopped since. I want to share this with the world. God has given gifts and talents that I can't let not be in shared. So as I grow I will help you grow the way you want to grow.
