Music Theory and Ear Training
My class focuses on music theory, music reading, interval recognition and construction. A significant portion of the course is also dedicated to harmony—understanding its importance and learning how to identify the chords that are being played in a song or musical composition.
Students will learn how to recognize and identify chords while developing a clear understanding of their function and their role within each musical phrase. The class also explores the different types and variations of major and minor scales, the circle of fifths and fourths, and, more broadly, the fundamental concepts covered by music theory.
Students will also develop their ability to notate what they hear on the musical staff. The class provides dedicated time for ear training and notation through musical dictation exercises, in which students will listen to melodies, intervals, and harmonic progressions and accurately notate them. They will also learn to identify the intervals between notes and practice harmonizing them.
Music theory can be taught according to either the American or European standard, depending on the student’s needs and background. This allows the lessons to be adapted to students who have been trained in different musical traditions and educational systems.
By the end of each lesson, students will have developed a stronger and more comprehensive understanding of music that they can apply to their personal musical interests, hobbies, or professional development.
