How to Read a Knitting Pattern: If you are a new knitter, finding and following knitting patterns can be intimidating. So many choices! This class will give you the information and confidence you need to be able to search for patterns that match your current skill level and challenge you in good ways.

How to Read a Knitting Pattern

New to knitting? Scared of knitting patterns? Don't know where to even start? Perfect! This is the class for you! Come learn how to translate what looks like a foreign language into something you can confidently interpret and follow. We will cover the basic parts of a knitting pattern as well as common terms and what they mean, abbreviations, sizing guides, supply requirements, designer notes, charts, and how to read line-by-line knitting instructions. This is all the things you need to know so you can confidently search for, select, and follow a knitting pattern.

We will look at real-life examples of knitting patterns, both modern and vintage, beginner to advanced, and well-edited versus possibly unedited. We will take a brief look at the largest online fiber community platform, Ravelry.com, as a resource for pattern searches based not only on search criteria (e.g. project type, skill level, etc.) but also on member project notes and pattern popularity. You will go away understanding what makes a pattern "work" and what will frustrate you as a knitter trying to follow a pattern that doesn't. As a mostly self-taught, decades-long knitter and someone who has designed knitting patterns, I can give students the inside scoop on what goes into designing and publishing a knitting pattern, the difference beetween "easy" and "beginner" patterns, and how to most effectively use online search tools to narrow down choices. We will look at real knitting patterns to see what makes sense and what does not. My goal is to take the scary out of even the most complicated knitting patterns.

About your instructor, Lynette:

I’m an artist, designer, actor, writer, teacher, and rescue dog mom. I’m on a mission to make beautiful things and help people learn to express their own creativity.I've taught for over thirty years. Often when someone says, “Gosh, I wish I knew how to…” my first reaction is excitement. “I know how—I can teach you!” As a lifetime learner there are very few things as gratifying to me as teaching someone else how to do something I love doing and then watching them give it their own personality and expression. We both get to grow.
