We will look at real-life examples of knitting patterns, both modern and vintage, beginner to advanced, and well-edited versus possibly unedited. We will take a brief look at the largest online fiber community platform, Ravelry.com, as a resource for pattern searches based not only on search criteria (e.g. project type, skill level, etc.) but also on member project notes and pattern popularity. You will go away understanding what makes a pattern "work" and what will frustrate you as a knitter trying to follow a pattern that doesn't.
As a mostly self-taught, decades-long knitter and someone who has designed knitting patterns, I can give students the inside scoop on what goes into designing and publishing a knitting pattern, the difference beetween "easy" and "beginner" patterns, and how to most effectively use online search tools to narrow down choices. We will look at real knitting patterns to see what makes sense and what does not. My goal is to take the scary out of even the most complicated knitting patterns.
