I am going on 25 years old, and I've been classically singing for 11 of those years. I've also had many years of soloist training and will be able to impart that knowledge as well. I have coached people as a tutor for the choir at my college for four years, as well as productions of two different musicals serving as the vocal coaching and music director. All this is to say I recognize the important of training both the contemporary and classical voice, highlight the large overlap between the two and create a blend of both worlds to have the most polished sound possible. Above everything else, I know what a joy it is to give yourself to the music and sing your heart out, and I also know the horror of being told "shut up" and "you suck", which is why I wanted to join choir so strongly in the first place. I want to give that gift to as many people as possible.
My class is about learning how to and/or improve whatever music you are interested in singing. Whether it be a song you are already working on or want repertoire tailored to you, we will build your voice and library of songs you can reliably pull out to impress people!
You will learn the basics of singing such as posture, breathing, the inner mechanics of the mouth/throat, etc. You will also learn basic music theory, your range, hydration habits, helpful tips and tricks and more.
I will ask of you to do a few exercises every day, and it will be evident to me on whether or not you haven't been doing them. Don't fret, I'll be doing them every day, same as you. If you have sheet music? Great! If you don't, I'll find some for you or even make a basic version myself. Feel free to print them out to have something physical in front of you. I will also make practice tracks for you so you can discover your own voice instead of attempting to imitate another's voice. And finally: a pencil, some water and a microphone of some kind. For a better experience, try a USB or XLR mic. A cheap but quality one is the Fifine AM8 (I am not sponsored by them in anyway).
I am also available at the following times (PST): Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. If these options don’t work for you, please use the “Suggest Your Meeting Times” feature to let us know your preferred schedule.
