Understanding that we are all individuals who may be at different stages of learning and experience, the course is designed to be self-paced. Students will learn a variety of styles, from folk to classical to jazz, pop and blues. Materials will be pulled from sources that have been used in college class piano courses for many years.
Students will learn the proper positioning of hand, arm, shoulders and back. We will explore many techniques of piano playing, such as arpeggios, rolled chords, block chords and different types of scales.
I have been playing piano for many decades. I have a Doctorate in piano from Arizona State University, but I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio.I started teaching private piano lessons when I was 18 years old, and I absolutely love it when a student has that "a-ha" moment because of something I said or showed. From 1998 to 2015, I taught piano classes through Maricopa Community colleges (esp. Glendale Community College and Scottsdale Community College). I also taught at Southwestern College, which is now Arizona Christian University, for six years and created the standards for their classes. I also taught at Grand Canyon University for two years. In addition to teaching, I have performed some very advanced music in several states and countries and play a variety of styles, I have also music directed and sung in and accompanied choirs and instrumentalists.\Now, I teach general music at a public school in Phoenix and have taught public school music for about 12 years.
