Anne Boleyn: Bewitching Us Since 1536: Explore the myth and reality of the Tudor queen in our online Anne Boleyn history class. Analyze how media shapes historical memory.

Anne Boleyn: Bewitching Us Since 1536

Why does Anne Boleyn still captivate us nearly five centuries after her execution?

Anne is more than just a historical figure. She is a cultural phenomenon. She has been portrayed as seductress, reformer, martyr, manipulator, victim, visionary, and sometimes all at once. This course examines not only the historical Anne Boleyn: queen, political actor, religious influence, but also the Anne Boleyn constructed through centuries of media, memory, and myth. From sixteenth-century ambassadorial dispatches to modern television dramas, Anne’s image has been shaped and reshaped to reflect the anxieties, values, and agendas of each generation.

At the heart of this course is one central question: How does the media distort, preserve, and even illuminate our memory of history? Rather than simply separating “fact” from “fiction,” we will explore why distortions emerge, what cultural work they perform, and how popular portrayals can both obscure and revive historical truth.

Who This Course Is For

  • Readers of historical fiction who want to understand the archive behind the drama
  • History enthusiasts seeking depth beyond popular portrayals (Particularly Tudor fans)
  • Individuals interested in historiography and media studies
  • Anyone fascinated by Anne Boleyn’s enduring cultural power

What Outcomes I would hope for in students:

  • Distinguish primary source evidence from later narrative construction
  • Identify recurring tropes in Anne Boleyn’s portrayals
  • Analyze how media shapes collective historical memory
  • Develop their own personal view on the pros and cons of presenting history in media

Why I Am the Ideal Instructor for This Course

I hold a PhD in Tudor history with a research focus precisely on the intersection of gender, politics, and memory in the sixteenth century. My published work examines how narrative frameworks shape our understanding of Tudor women, particularly Anne Boleyn and how events such as her 1536 miscarriage carried profound political consequences that later retellings often distort or oversimplify. I have presented this research at academic conferences, where it has received award recognition, and I remain actively engaged in scholarly conversations surrounding Tudor historiography. Beyond the classroom, I have lived in England and conducted archival research firsthand, working directly with primary materials that shape our understanding of Anne’s world. I have spent time in the archives reading state papers, ambassadorial correspondence, and contemporary commentary, tracing the very origins of the narratives that still influence popular culture today. This course is not simply an overview of Anne Boleyn. It is the result of years spent in archives, scholarship, and historiographical debate, combined with a deep awareness of how modern media continues to shape collective memory. My goal is to bring together rigorous academic analysis and accessible cultural critique so that students can appreciate both the historical Anne and the Anne who lives on in the story. In addition apply this to other notable historic figures so often presented in media today and across time. I have an outline I can email for the class as well.
