Astrology is a complex symbolic system that has played a significant role in religious, philosophical, and cultural traditions across time. In this introductory course, I approach astrology as a historical and interpretive framework rather than a set of predictions. Students will be invited to examine astrology as a language of symbols that has been used to understand human experience, identity, and meaning in relation to the cosmos.

In this class, students will learn the foundational components of Western astrology, including the zodiac, planetary archetypes, houses, and aspects. We will explore how natal charts are constructed and how astrologers analyze patterns and relationships within a chart. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, symbolic interpretation, and the relationship between astrology, psychology, and cultural history. No prior knowledge is required, and all concepts will be introduced systematically.
I am uniquely qualified to teach this course through my academic training in Religious Studies and Anthropology. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies with a minor in Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. My academic work has focused on belief systems, myth, symbolism, and meaning-making across cultures, and I draw on these disciplines to situate astrology within broader intellectual and historical contexts. I have also taught enrichment courses and supported university students, experiences that inform my structured yet student-centered approach to instruction.
The course will be conducted in a seminar-style format that combines short lectures, guided analysis, and structured discussion. Students will engage with charts as case studies and, if they choose, their own natal charts as analytical texts. Assignments and activities are designed to encourage careful observation, interpretation, and reflection rather than belief or persuasion. By the end of the course, students will have a foundational understanding of astrology as an interpretive system and the analytical tools needed to engage with it thoughtfully and critically.
