This course is a hands-on exploration of the craft of songwriting designed for anyone ready to turn their musical ideas into complete, polished songs. We move beyond just "waiting for inspiration" by teaching you a step-by-step method to build professional-quality music from the ground up. Whether you are a musician, a lyricist, or especially a complete beginner, this class provides a creative outlet to share your stories and express your unique artistic voice.
Class Time:
8 hours of learning!
By the end of this course, you will have the tools to write, refine, and perform your own original material. Key learning outcomes include:
Song Structure & Vocabulary: Master essential forms like verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus (ABABCB) and verse-verse-bridge-verse (AABA) to give your songs a professional flow no matter your go-to genre.
Lyric Craft: Learn techniques for storytelling, imagery, and rhyme schemes to create lyrics that resonate with listeners.
Melodic Design: Develop catchy hooks and memorable melodies that "stick" in a listener's head.
Creative Workflow: Overcome writer’s block using inspiration, journals, and specific writing prompts.
The Big Picture: Gain a basic understanding of publishing, copyright, and the music industry to protect and share your work.
I bring a blend of professional experience and a passion for mentorship to every lesson. Rather than just lecturing, I act as a "guide on the side" facilitating your creative process while providing personalized feedback on your projects. My goal is to create a fun, supportive environment where you feel safe to experiment, fail, and ultimately discover your best work. I have been writing for more than 40 years, am an award- and honor-winning songwriter, and since 2020 I have had 25 independent artist releases internationally.
This is a flexible online experience designed to fit your schedule while keeping you connected:
Interactive Modules: Each week features interactive online lessons, downloadable resources, and writing assignments.
Songwriters' Circle: Participate in a peer-to-peer forum to share your work-in-progress and receive constructive criticism.
Live Workshopping: Group sessions where we break down hit songs and co-write in small groups.
Final Performance: The course culminates in a "demo drop" where you present your completed original solo-written and co-written songs. We will use some AI tools to help produce your songs, and so you don't need any music production experience.
I am a current, award-winning songwriter who writes in a variety of genres, including pop, country, Christian, and film and television. I have had over 25 independent artist cuts internationally. I have written over 400 songs, a great number of which are in artist pitch and music supervisor catalogs to pitch to artists and film/television.
This class is also available on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern Time. If you are not available at the posted meeting time, please use the "Suggest Your Own Meeting Times" feature to let us know which schedule you prefer.
